This learning module introduces learners to the principles and practice of privacy and data protection in modern information systems, with particular emphasis on European legal and regulatory frameworks such as the GDPR. It begins by exploring the foundations of privacy, personal-data protection, data-subject rights, and the relationship between legal obligations, organisational accountability, and information security. Learners develop an understanding of how privacy and data protection shape the responsible design and operation of digital services.
The module then examines how emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, create new legal, ethical, and governance challenges for organisations. Learners are introduced to core compliance tools such as Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), and explore how these support risk identification, accountability, and privacy by design. The module also presents Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), helping learners understand how technical safeguards can reduce exposure, support data minimisation, and strengthen trust in data-driven systems.
In addition, the module considers the intersection of privacy and digital forensics, showing how investigations can be conducted in ways that respect legal and ethical boundaries while preserving evidence and maintaining compliance. Through practical scenarios, case studies, and assessment activities, learners develop the ability to explain key privacy and data-protection concepts, apply GDPR-related principles, recommend appropriate safeguards, and connect legal requirements to everyday cybersecurity and organisational practice.
